Black ZZ

The ZZ plant is an evergreen member of the arum family, Araceae, native to eastern Africa, from Kenya south to South Africa. It grows there in seasonally dry grassland and forest, which is why it copes so well with irregular watering. The black-leaved form shares everything with the green ZZ except its colour.

What makes it stand out:

• Colour. New stems unfurl bright lime green, then darken over four to eight weeks to a deep purple-black. A plant often shows both colours at once in the growing season. This is normal, not a fault.
• Leaves. Each upright stem carries six to eight pairs of thick, waxy leaflets with a natural shine. They look almost polished, without any leaf spray.
• Stems. Fleshy and swollen at the base, rising in a neat, vase-like clump.
• Roots. Potato-like rhizomes under the soil store water for weeks. They are the reason the plant forgives a missed watering.
• Flowers. A small, cream spathe sometimes appears near the soil on mature plants. It is rare indoors and easy to miss.

Growth is slow and steady: expect a few new stems each year, mostly between March and October.

Where should you keep a Black ZZ?

This is a plant that fits where most others struggle. It tolerates dim rooms, air-conditioning and office lighting, and its dark foliage stands out against white or pale walls.

• Rooms with little daylight. It is one of the most reliable houseplants for a dim corridor or a north-facing flat. In very low light it grows more slowly and new shoots take longer to darken.
• Offices and work desks. It shrugs off fluorescent light and cool, dry air, which puts it among the best desk plants that cope with air-conditioning and office lights.
• Living rooms. A larger specimen in a white or brass planter makes a striking accent, alongside other statement plants for a modern, minimal living room.
• Bedrooms. It needs no attention for weeks and suits the softer light of a bedroom, much like other plants for a bedroom with soft, filtered light.

Avoid south- or west-facing sills where afternoon sun hits the leaves through glass, as it can bleach or scorch them. Keep it off cold, draughty floors in north Indian winters.

How do you care for a Black ZZ plant?

The ZZ is famous for thriving on neglect, and most problems come from too much care rather than too little. It belongs firmly among plants that forgive a forgotten fortnight of watering.

• Light. Medium to bright indirect light gives the fastest growth and the deepest colour. It survives in low light, but grows slowly there.
• Watering. Water only when the soil is dry all the way down, then soak it until water drains out. Usually every 2–3 weeks in summer and every 4–6 weeks in winter. When in doubt, wait a week.
• Potting mix. Fast-draining: about two parts potting soil to one part perlite or coarse sand, with a handful of cocopeat. Never use heavy garden soil.
• Pot and pot size. Always use a drainage hole. Choose a pot only 3–5 cm wider than the root ball; an oversized pot holds wet soil and invites rot. Repot every two to three years, when rhizomes start to bulge or crack a plastic pot.
• Temperature. Happiest between 18 °C and 32 °C. Protect it from nights below about 12 °C.
• Humidity. Ordinary room humidity is fine. It needs no misting.
• Feeding. Half-strength liquid houseplant fertiliser once a month from March to September. None in winter.
• Cleaning. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep the shine. Avoid leaf-shine sprays.

Propagation. Divide the clump at repotting, keeping rhizomes attached to each section. Single leaflets can also root in moist mix or water, but they take several months to form a new rhizome. Note that dark shoots from leaf cuttings can come up greener at first.

Why is the new growth on my Black ZZ green?

Because that is how this plant grows. Every new stem emerges lime green and gradually darkens to black over several weeks. In good indirect light the change is faster and the final colour deeper. In a very dark corner, new growth can stay greenish for longer. The contrast between fresh green shoots and older black stems is one of the plant's charms, and a sign it is growing well.

Is the ZZ plant safe for cats and dogs?

No. Every part of the ZZ plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, and pet poison resources list it as toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing usually causes mouth irritation, drooling, pawing at the face and sometimes vomiting. Serious poisoning is uncommon, but keep it on a high shelf or in a room pets do not use.

For people, touching the leaves is safe. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wash your hands after pruning or repotting, and keep it away from small children who may chew leaves. Does a Black ZZ purify the air?

Not in any way you would notice at home. Laboratory studies on ZZ plants measured small reductions in chemicals inside sealed chambers, but a 2019 review of decades of research found that potted plants cannot measurably clean the air in a normal room. The Black ZZ and Vastu

Some modern Vastu and Feng Shui advisers recommend the ZZ plant for prosperity, usually near the entrance or in the south-east corner of a room. Classical Vastu texts do not mention it, since it reached Indian homes only in recent decades, so treat this as recent convention rather than tradition. Many families still enjoy placing it that way, and it is a handsome plant wherever it sits.

Black ZZ through the Bengal year

These timings come from growing ZZ plants in the Hooghly climate and suit most of the eastern plains.

March to June: the growing season. New shoots appear and darken. Water every two to three weeks and feed monthly. Keep it back from windows that get strong afternoon sun.

July to September: monsoon, the risky months. Humid air means the soil dries very slowly, and this is when most ZZ plants are lost to root rot. Check the soil with a finger or a wooden stick and water only when it is bone dry, often just once a month.

October to November: the best time to repot or divide. Mild weather and steady light help roots settle. Move up one pot size only if the rhizomes fill the pot.

December to February: slow and cool. Growth almost stops. Water every four to six weeks and stop feeding. In north Indian winters, keep it away from cold windows and doors.

What problems affect a Black ZZ?

• Yellowing leaves with damp soil. Overwatering, by far the most common cause. Let the soil dry out completely and check that the pot drains.
• Soft, mushy stems turning black at the soil line. Root or rhizome rot, not the plant's natural colour. Unpot it, cut away soft brown or black rhizomes, dust the cuts with cinnamon or fungicide, and replant in dry, gritty mix.
• Wrinkled leaflets or shrivelled stems. Genuine thirst, which is rare. Water thoroughly.
• Long, leaning stems. Too little light. Move it nearer a bright window. The plant is also said to be "growing tall" when stems stretch toward the light.
• Brown, crisp patches. Sun scorch through glass. Move it out of direct sun.
• Mealybugs or scale. White fluff or brown bumps on stems. Wipe them off and spray diluted neem oil weekly.

The firm, glossy, near-black stems of a healthy plant are perfectly normal. Worry only if they turn soft or smell bad.

Plants that pair well with a Black ZZ
