Buy outdoor plants online for terraces, roof gardens, courtyards, entrances, boundary walls and open balconies. What decides success here is not the plant you like the look of — it is how many hours of direct sun the spot receives. Every plant in this range is grown in open sun at our own nurseries in Rishra and Joka. It reaches you hardened to Indian heat, wind and rain, not raised soft under shade net.

Count the hours of direct sun before you choose anything
Outdoor plants fail more often for a light reason than a care reason. Work out how many hours of sun actually reach the spot where the pot will stand.
Check it three times on a clear day: nine in the morning, noon, and three. Count only the checks where sunlight is landing on that exact spot. Bright sky overhead with the spot in shadow does not count.
Under 3 hours. Shaded courtyards, north-facing setbacks, ground floors behind a tall boundary wall. Choose for leaves rather than blooms — Areca Palm holds its shape here. Flowering shrubs will survive this band and stay stubbornly green.
3 to 5 hours. Where most Indian terraces and courtyards actually sit. Ixora, Vinca and Rain Lily flower dependably on this much.
5 hours and above. Open roofs, west-facing terraces, unshaded gates. The band for Bougainvillea, Adenium and Allamanda, all of which bloom harder as the light strengthens.
Say it plainly: a sun-lover in a two-hour corner rarely dies. It stretches, grows thin and never flowers — a slower disappointment than a plant that simply fails.
Sun, water and mature size at a glance
| Plant | Direct sun needed | Summer watering | Mature size in a pot | Flowers or foliage | Where it works best |
| Bougainvillea | 5+ hours | Sparingly — let the pot dry between waterings | 3–6 ft, held by pruning | Flowers | Terrace edge, boundary wall, sunny railing |
| Adenium | 5+ hours | Only once the soil is dry through | 1–2 ft | Flowers | Open ledge; move under cover in heavy rain |
| Allamanda | 5+ hours | Two soakings a week at peak heat | 3–5 ft | Flowers | Sunny wall, gate side, large pot |
| Parijat | 5+ hours | Twice a week in summer, far less in winter | 4–6 ft in a deep pot | Scented flowers, at night | Open terrace corner, courtyard |
| Mogra | 4–6 hours | Steady — do not let it dry out completely | 2–3 ft | Scented flowers | Beside a doorway or seating area |
| Aparajita | 5+ hours | Two waterings a week in summer | Climbs 6–10 ft on support | Flowers | Grille, mesh, boundary fence |
| Madhabilata | 5+ hours | Twice a week once established | Climbs 10 ft and beyond | Scented flowers | Pergola, terrace canopy |
| Ixora | 3–5 hours | Twice a week in summer | 2–4 ft | Flowers | Part-sun terrace, entrance row |
| Vinca | 3–5 hours | Alternate days in peak heat | 1–1.5 ft | Flowers | Railing pots, edging, small terrace |
| Rain Lily | 3–5 hours | Regular through the rains, then a dry rest | 8–12 in | Flowers | Pot edges, borders, shallow trays |
| Curry Leaf | 4–6 hours | When the top two inches feel dry | 3–5 ft in a pot | Kitchen foliage | Kitchen terrace, sunny courtyard |
| Areca Palm | Part shade | Evenly moist, never standing wet | 4–6 ft in shade outdoors | Foliage | Shaded courtyard, covered entrance |
Ground bed, pot, or a roof that has to carry it
Where a plant will physically live changes what you should buy, not merely what you plant it in.
In the ground. The deepest root run and the least watering, because open soil holds moisture no container can match. It is also permanent, so if you rent, use pots and keep the option of taking the garden with you.
In pots. The flexible choice most buyers need. Allow 10 to 12 inches of depth for a small flowering shrub. Give a large shrub, a palm or anything expected to fruit 16 to 18 inches. Keep the drainage holes clear, and stand containers on feet or bricks so water leaves instead of pooling underneath.
On a roof or terrace slab. Wet soil is heavy. A long row of large containers is a structural question before it is a gardening one, so ask your builder or society first. A pot resting flat on waterproofing traps moisture against it, which is how terraces begin to seep. Raise them, and keep them clear of the parapet outlets so the slab still drains. For a full roof garden, our terrace range covers the setup properly.
The three stretches of the year that kill outdoor plants
April and May. Afternoon heat and dry wind together pull water from leaves faster than roots replace it. Water early in the morning rather than at midday. Anything newly delivered wants a fortnight of partial afternoon shade first.
The pre-monsoon squall. A Nor'wester builds in under an hour and flattens whatever is tall and unanchored. Shift lighter containers against a wall, stake anything top-heavy, and check hanging fixtures before the season, not after the first storm.
June to September. Pots stay saturated for weeks and roots suffocate quietly. In this belt, waterlogging causes far more losses than drought ever does. Lift containers, clear every hole, and stop watering out of habit — feel the soil first.
Drier parts of north and west India run the opposite risk: heat and dry wind, so the schedule shifts and the drainage worry eases.
Buying for a rooftop, a housing society or a landscape project
Bulk garden plants work differently from a single pot, and we quote them differently. Four routes we handle regularly. Planting out a whole terrace or roof garden. Common areas, entrances and driveways for housing societies. Supply to landscapers, builders and hardscape contractors. Seasonal replanting for a garden already under maintenance. Send the space, its sun hours and what you want it to look like, and we will send a rate card rather than a cart total. Buyers near our Kolkata nursery can arrange a site visit. Frequently asked questions
How many hours of direct sun do outdoor plants actually need? Four to six hours for dependable flowering, three or fewer for foliage alone. Under three hours, buy for leaf shape and stop expecting blooms. Above six, nearly everything here performs, provided the pot never sits in water.
Which outdoor plant flowers the most with the least care? Bougainvillea, given five or more hours of sun. It blooms hardest when kept slightly dry and slightly neglected. Rich soil and generous watering give you a healthy green plant with very few bracts. Prune after each flush, then let the pot dry before watering again.
Will my terrace pots survive heavy monsoon rain?
Yes, as long as water can leave the pot quickly. Blocked holes and containers sitting flat on the floor cause the losses, not the rainfall itself. Raise everything on feet or bricks and clear the drainage before June arrives.
What can I grow on a west-facing terrace that bakes all afternoon?
Plants that enjoy strong light rather than merely tolerate it — Bougainvillea, Adenium, Allamanda and Parijat all take it. Water first thing in the morning, never at two in the afternoon. Terracotta and light-coloured pots also run cooler than black plastic.
Which outdoor plants stay green all year?
Areca Palm, Curry Leaf and Ixora hold their foliage through the whole calendar in most of India. Flowering shrubs are seasonal by nature — several thin out in the cold months and return with the warmth. Mix the two so the space still looks furnished in January.
Do you deliver large or heavy plants, and how are they packed? Yes. Larger stock is pruned back, the root ball is wrapped, and the plant is braced inside the carton so it cannot shift. Some leaf drop on arrival is normal and growth resumes within a few weeks.
How long will delivery take to my PIN code?
Dispatch is within one to two working days, and delivery usually runs two to seven business days, depending on distance from our nurseries. Shipping is free above ₹499 within West Bengal and above ₹999 for the rest of India; below that, the charge is calculated at checkout. Check your PIN code.
