Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Euphorbia Plant

The euphorbia sold here is Euphorbia milii, the crown of thorns: a spiny, flowering succulent from Madagascar with green leaves and bright bracts in red, pink, yellow or white.

No. It belongs to the spurge family, has milky sap and grows real leaves. It needs similar care to a cactus: full sun, fast-draining soil and little water.

It grows best outdoors on a sunny balcony, terrace or garden bed. Indoors it needs a very bright, sunny window, or it drops leaves and stops flowering.

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. That is about once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter, with less during the monsoon.

At least six hours of direct sun a day for steady flowering. It tolerates light midday shade in the hottest months.

In warm, sunny conditions it flowers for most of the year. In India the main show is from late winter to spring, with smaller flushes in other months.

Yes. Its milky sap irritates skin and eyes, and chewing it upsets the stomachs of dogs, cats and people. Keep it out of reach and wear gloves when handling it.

Usually because of cold, too little light, very dry soil or a recent move. Fix the conditions and new leaves usually appear within a few weeks.

Traditional Vastu often keeps thorny plants away from the entrance and bedroom and places them on a balcony, terrace or garden. It is a matter of belief.

In a pot it usually stays between 30 and 90 cm. Planted in the ground in a warm climate, it can reach about 1–1.5 m over several years.

Take a 10–15 cm stem cutting in spring, wearing gloves. Rinse off the sap, let the cut end dry for a few days, then plant it in dry, gritty mix.

No. A pot just wider than the root ball, with a drainage hole, is best. Repot every two years or so into one size larger.

About Euphorbia Plant

The crown of thorns is Euphorbia milii, a shrubby succulent from Madagascar in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It is also called the Christ plant or Christ thorn, and in Bengal it is often known as kanta mukut. The genus Euphorbia is one of the largest in the plant world, with around 2,000 species. The poinsettia is a close relative.

What you will notice when it arrives:

  • Stems. Woody, grey-brown and covered in sharp spines up to about 2 cm long. They branch slowly into a sculpted, slightly wild shape.
  • Leaves. Smooth, bright green and oval, usually 2–5 cm long, clustered at the tips of the stems. The plant drops older leaves when it is cold, dry or short of light, then grows new ones.
  • "Flowers". The colour comes from pairs of rounded bracts, which are modified leaves, in red, pink, yellow, white or salmon. The true flowers are tiny and sit in the middle.
  • Sap. A milky white latex runs through every stem and leaf. It is the plant's defence, and it is the one thing to handle with care.
  • Growth. Slow to moderate. In a pot it usually stays between 30 and 90 cm; planted in the ground in a warm climate it can reach about 1–1.5 m.

Is euphorbia a cactus?

No, though it is easy to see why people think so. Cacti belong to a different family and grow their spines from small woolly pads called areoles. Euphorbias have no areoles, carry milky sap, and the crown of thorns grows real leaves. Both families evolved to survive drought, so the care is similar: sun, sharp drainage and a light hand with water.

Where does a euphorbia plant look best?

It needs light more than anything else, and repays it with colour.

It does not suit a dim room, a bathroom, an office desk away from the window, or anywhere small children and pets can reach.

How do you care for a euphorbia plant?

The short answer: lots of sun, water only when the top of the soil is dry, and soil that drains fast.

  • Light. Six hours or more of direct sun gives the most flowers. In the hottest parts of India it accepts a little shade at midday in May and June.
  • Watering. Because it has leaves, it drinks a little more than a cactus. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry, let the excess drain away, and empty the saucer. In a pot that usually means about once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter.
  • Soil. A light, gritty mix: one part garden soil or cocopeat, one part coarse sand and one part perlite or brick chips, with a handful of compost.
  • Feeding. A balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month from February to September keeps flowers coming. Skip it in winter.
  • Pruning. Trim in late winter or spring to shape it. Wear gloves, cut cleanly, and rinse the cut ends with water to stop the sap.
  • Temperature. It is happiest between about 15 and 35 °C. It tolerates heat well, but should not sit below about 5 °C.
  • Repotting. Every two years or so, in spring, into a pot one size larger with a drainage hole. Wrap the stems in thick newspaper before you lift it.

Because it needs so little attention, it earns its place among tough plants for gardeners who travel often.

How often does a crown of thorns flower?

In warm, sunny conditions it can flower for most of the year, which is why many gardeners treat it as an all-season bloomer. In much of India the heaviest show comes from late winter through spring, with smaller flushes in summer and autumn. Bracts on each cluster last for weeks.

If it stops flowering, the cause is almost always too little sun. Move it to the brightest spot you have and it should send up new buds within a few weeks. It fits naturally among flowering plants that keep colour going between the seasons.

Euphorbia plant through the Indian year

These timings come from growing it on the sun-baked benches of our Kolkata plant nursery and suit most of eastern and southern India.

February to May: peak growth and colour. Full sun, regular watering when dry, monthly feeding. The best time to prune, repot or take cuttings.

June to September: monsoon caution. The real risk is wet soil, not heat. Move pots under a ledge or shade so heavy rain cannot waterlog them, and water only when the top of the soil is dry. Our notes on keeping sun-loving plants healthy through weeks of rain cover drainage in more detail.

October to January: slower growth. Water less often. In north India, bring pots under cover on nights that fall close to 5 °C; some leaf drop in a cold spell is normal and the plant regrows in spring.

What problems affect a euphorbia plant?

  • Leaves dropping. Usually cold, a sudden move, very dry soil or too little light. Check the conditions; new leaves follow once it settles.
  • Soft, dark stems at the base. Rot from waterlogged soil. Stop watering, improve drainage, and cut back to healthy tissue if needed.
  • No flowers. Not enough sun. Give it more direct light.
  • White cottony specks. Mealybugs. Dab them with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol and repeat weekly.
  • Fine webbing and speckled leaves. Spider mites in hot, dry weather. Rinse the plant and spray with diluted neem oil.

Is a euphorbia plant safe for pets and children?

No. The milky sap irritates skin and can cause serious injury if it gets into the eyes, and chewing the plant causes drooling, vomiting and stomach upset in dogs and cats. The thorny stems add a second hazard. Keep it on a balcony rail, terrace or high sill out of reach, wear gloves when handling it, and wash your hands afterwards. If sap touches your eyes, rinse with clean water and see a doctor.

If you want colour in a home with pets, a holiday cactus with no thorns and no toxic sap is the safer choice for a low shelf.

Is the crown of thorns good for the home as per Vastu?

Traditional Vastu advice usually keeps thorny plants away from the main entrance and the bedroom, and places them on a balcony, terrace or in the garden. Some households keep it outdoors as a protective boundary plant. This is a matter of belief rather than horticulture. If Vastu matters to you, see where Vastu tradition places thorny and flowering plants outside the home.

Does a euphorbia plant purify the air?

Not in any way you would notice. Research shows that a few pots have no measurable effect on room air compared with opening a window. Choose it for its year-round colour and easy nature instead.
